Carol Ladewig’s Rhythm series (2010–present) of loose, abstract vertical and horizontal stripe paintings explores cyclic time through color and repetition. Evolving from the fascination with color-mixing that structured Ladewig’s Painting Time series of calendar paintings, these works play with perception: some use naturalistic palettes to suggest light and space, while others introduce dissonant passages that foreground surface and texture.

With titles that reference locations, certain paintings hint at treelines, or layered horizons. Others appear to have a camera’s motion blur. Each is an improvisation that reveals the artist’s hand through passages of thick paint, translucency, drybrush, and imperfections. If the sense of time in these works could be heard, it would be less like a metronome and more like the natural rhythms of the world - a repeating, emergent pattern.
